Gifted Hands by Dr Ben Carson

"Gifted Hands" is an inspiring autobiography of Dr. Ben Carson, a renowned neurosurgeon and former director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Co-authored by Cecil Murphey, the book chronicles Carson's extraordinary journey from a troubled childhood in Detroit, Michigan, to becoming one of the most respected figures in medicine.

Carson grew up in a low-income household, facing challenges such as poverty, a single-parent family, and academic struggles. However, with the unwavering support of his mother, who insisted on education and hard work, he turned his life around. He eventually excelled academically, earning a scholarship to Yale University and later attending the University of Michigan Medical School.

The memoir not only details Carson's professional accomplishments, including groundbreaking surgeries and innovative techniques in neurosurgery, but also emphasizes his personal beliefs, faith, and the importance of perseverance. He shares various anecdotes from his medical career, including the famous separation of conjoined twins, which showcases his skill and commitment to his patients.

Here are lessons from the book:

1. Overcoming Adversity: Carson’s life is a powerful narrative of resilience. Born into a challenging environment, he faced academic struggles and socioeconomic obstacles. Yet, he transformed his life through sheer determination and hard work. This lesson teaches us that adversity can serve as a catalyst for growth. When faced with difficulties, we can either succumb to despair or rise to the occasion, using our challenges as stepping stones towards success.

2. The Power of Education: Education is a recurring theme in Carson's story. His mother's insistence on reading and learning—despite their financial struggles—changed the trajectory of his life. This lesson underscores the idea that knowledge is a powerful tool for empowerment. Investing in education not only broadens our horizons but also equips us with the skills necessary to navigate and improve our circumstances.

3. Influence of Family Support: Carson's relationship with his mother is a central pillar of his success. Her encouragement and belief in his abilities instilled confidence in him, even when he doubted himself. This highlights the profound impact that family and mentors can have on an individual’s journey. Supportive relationships can provide the motivation and reassurance needed to pursue our dreams, reinforcing the idea that we are not alone in our struggles.

4. Faith as a Guiding Force: Carson’s faith plays a significant role in his life and career decisions. He often refers to moments where his belief in God provided him with strength during tough times. This lesson invites readers to consider the importance of spirituality or personal beliefs in guiding their actions and decisions. Faith can foster resilience, provide comfort, and inspire individuals to push through challenges with hope and purpose.

5. Importance of Hard Work: Carson’s achievements are a testament to the value of hard work. He emphasizes that while talent is important, it is the dedication and effort that ultimately lead to success. This lesson serves as a reminder that there are no shortcuts to greatness. Consistency, perseverance, and a strong work ethic are essential ingredients for achieving long-term goals.

6. Embracing Opportunities: Throughout his life, Carson seized opportunities that came his way, even when they were intimidating. Whether it was applying for medical school or taking on complex surgical cases, he embraced challenges head-on. This lesson encourages us to recognize and act upon opportunities, as they often lead to personal and professional growth. The willingness to step out of our comfort zones can open doors we never imagined possible.

7. Compassion in Medicine: Carson’s experiences as a surgeon highlight the importance of compassion in the medical profession. He stresses that technical expertise must be coupled with a genuine concern for patients' well-being. This lesson extends beyond medicine, advocating for empathy in all professions and interactions. Compassion fosters trust, enhances relationships, and creates a more humane society.

8. Pursuing Dreams Relentlessly: Carson’s journey from a struggling student to a world-renowned neurosurgeon epitomizes the pursuit of dreams. He emphasizes the importance of passion and tenacity in achieving one’s aspirations. This lesson inspires readers to remain steadfast in their pursuits, regardless of the obstacles they may encounter. A relentless focus on one’s goals can lead to remarkable achievements.

9. The Value of Mentorship: Throughout his career, Carson benefited from the guidance of mentors who helped him navigate challenges and refine his skills. This underscores the importance of seeking out mentors who can provide wisdom and insight. This lesson emphasizes the reciprocal nature of mentorship—while seeking guidance, we should also strive to be mentors to others, sharing our experiences and knowledge to help them succeed.

10. Living a Purpose-Driven Life: Carson's commitment to making a difference in the lives of others is a central theme of his story. He illustrates that true fulfillment comes from serving others and contributing positively to society. This lesson encourages readers to reflect on their own purposes and consider how they can align their actions with their values.

THE TIGER AND THE MONKEY

A Short Moral Story.

A long, long time ago, a poor and old tiger married a very beautiful and lovely woman. In fact, she was the most wonderful woman in the kingdom.

Meanwhile, a rich monkey got jealous of the tiger and wanted his wife for himself. One day, he went to him and said,

"You're too poor and too old for such a beautiful woman. Your wife cannot look good if you cannot take care of her. A woman needs a good maintainance for her beauty to show up properly. Listen, I want your wife for myself, I will give you lots of money, anything you ask for!"

The tiger scoffed and grunted,
"Not even in your dreams, monkey! I love my wife and she loves me. I don't care how much you have to offer!"

The monkey went home that night feeling sad and like a failure. His jealousy grew deeper and stronger. He began to craft a plan to take the tiger's wife away from him. He thought to himself,

"I will prepare a delicious soup with memory loss ingredients. I will offer the soup to the tiger. When he eats it, he will lose his memory and forget his wife forever. And then, I will bring her to my home and make her my own wife."

One day, the monkey visited the tiger and offered him a bowl of steaming soup which he had prepared with memory loss ingredients. The tiger was full of gratitude and he said,
"Oh, monkey, I won't forget this. You're so kind to serve such a sumptuous meal to a poor fellow like me. Thank you!"

The following day, the monkey visited the tiger to find out if he had lost his memory. He asked him desperately,
"Is your wife at home?"

The tiger gave him a confused look and answered,
"What wife? I've never been married before, I have no wife. By the way, who are you?"

The monkey jumped happily, knowing that his plan had worked- the tiger had finally lost his memory. He quickly went to the tiger's wife and told her he wanted to marry her.

The tiger's wife smiled and accepted his proposal immediately. She told him,
"I should probably pack my belongings right away and move in with you. But while I do that, why don't you eat the meal that I prepared?"

She went into the kitchen and came out with a bowl of steaming rice and sauce which she offered to the monkey. He began to eat with so much gladness and happiness.

As soon as he finished the food, the tiger suddenly walked in and together with his wife, they burst into a loud laughter, mocking and ridiculing the monkey. Then, the tiger told the surprised monkey,

"You are a big fool! I knew you were up to something, so I didn't eat the soup you brought to me. I told my wife and we got everything planned out. She prepared a sauce with your soup and made you eat it. So now, you will lose your memory and forget everything in your life!"

The monkey was shocked and scared to the core. He panicked, jumped from the balcony, and ran for help, but it was all too late. Shortly, he began to lose his memory. He forgot his home, forgot his family, forgot his name and everything. He climbed up to a tree and lived there forever.

"Reasons Not to Worry" by Brigid Delaney

"Reasons Not to Worry" by Brigid Delaney. In this thoughtful and practical book, Delaney draws on the teachings of ancient Stoicism and blends them with modern-day wisdom to help readers navigate life’s challenges with calmness, clarity, and resilience. The book serves as a guide to finding peace in an often chaotic world, offering actionable insights on how to live well and worry less.

1. Worry Is a Waste of Energy
Delaney emphasizes that worrying doesn’t solve problems—it only drains your energy and clouds your thinking. Drawing on Stoic philosophy, she explains that fretting about things outside our control is unproductive and unnecessary. Instead, we should focus on what we can control: our thoughts, actions, and responses.

2. Focus on What You Can Control
A key Stoic principle highlighted in the book is the dichotomy of control. Delaney explains that we should distinguish between the things we can influence (our choices, behaviors, and attitudes) and the things we can’t (other people’s actions, the past, or external events). Letting go of what’s beyond our control helps reduce anxiety.

3. Accept Impermanence
Delaney encourages readers to embrace the impermanence of life—both its joys and hardships. By accepting that everything changes, we can stop clinging to what we can’t hold onto and find peace in the present moment. This perspective helps us approach life with a sense of calm and detachment.

4. Cultivate Gratitude
Gratitude is a powerful antidote to worry. Delaney suggests that focusing on what we have, rather than what we lack, helps us find contentment and perspective. Practicing gratitude regularly can shift our mindset away from fear and toward appreciation of the present.

5. Learn to Reframe Challenges
The book teaches the importance of reframing difficulties as opportunities for growth. Inspired by Stoic ideas, Delaney shows that even painful experiences can teach us resilience, patience, and strength. By viewing challenges as lessons, we can approach adversity with curiosity and courage.

6. Practice Mindfulness
Delaney underscores the connection between worry and living in the future. Mindfulness—being fully present in the moment—can help break the cycle of anxious thinking. She provides practical tips for incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing, into daily life.

7. Detach from the Need for Approval
Another key insight is that seeking constant validation from others contributes to unnecessary worry. Delaney reminds readers that we can’t control what others think of us, nor should we let their opinions dictate how we live. True freedom comes from letting go of this need and staying true to ourselves.

8. Embrace Simplicity
Drawing on Stoic values of moderation and simplicity, Delaney encourages readers to declutter their lives—both physically and mentally. Too many possessions, commitments, or distractions can amplify stress, while simplifying our lives can bring clarity and peace.

9. Build Inner Strength
Delaney highlights the importance of cultivating resilience and inner strength. By practicing small acts of self-discipline and facing discomfort intentionally, we can build the mental fortitude needed to handle life’s bigger challenges with grace and composure.

10. Worry Less, Live More
Ultimately, Delaney’s message is that life is too short to spend it worrying. When we let go of unnecessary fears and focus on living fully in the present, we can experience greater joy, connection, and fulfillment. Worry will always exist, but we can choose not to let it dominate our lives.

In "Reasons Not to Worry," Brigid Delaney provides a modern and accessible take on Stoicism, offering readers both philosophical insights and practical tools to reduce anxiety and cultivate peace. Her lessons remind us that worry is not inevitable—it’s a habit we can break by shifting our perspective and focusing on what truly matters. By embracing impermanence, living mindfully, and letting go of what we can’t control, we can create a life filled with greater calm, clarity, and purpose. Delaney’s book is a gentle yet powerful reminder that peace begins within—and it’s always within reach.
